Stairways like these certainly have an atmosphere of past times, however, they are awkward to walk on.
I prefer to use the back entrances, which were used by samurai on horseback, in big temples, such as Chion-in, in Kyoto. They are much easierto walk on as they are not as worn as the main stairways usually.
It looks as if people don't walk in the middle of the stairways.
